10 Reasons to Shop Handmade

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines "haven" as: a place offering favorable opportunities or conditions.  One of the primary purposes of Mama-press is to offer opportunities to very small mom owned businesses...moms sewing or crafting in their basements after the kids are asleep.  In other words, I provide a "Handmade Haven." I offer a business directory as well as seasonal catalogs showcasing some great mom-made products.  My Halloween CATalog is live, and my Candy Cane Catalog will go live 11/1.  These both (will) contain handmade items by moms.  Below is a list of 10 reasons you should shop handmade:
  1. Made with care (and love). Put simply, someone's blood, sweat, and tears go into these items.  It's not a machine or an assembly line creating these goods.  It's someone who cares about each individual product.  It's an item that was touched by a person from beginning to end...handmade.
  2. Eco-friendly. The handmade process by definition doesn't create harmful emissions.  The only by-product may be the crafter's "blood, sweat, and tears!"  There are no harmful gases emitted, the carbon footprint is extremely small.
  3. Local. Thus far, the business on my site are all local.  They are Made in the USA (a couple may be Canadian).  So, there are limited transportation costs involved with delivery of the final product.
  4. Unique. When you buy at a mall, the item is a "dime a dozen."  There could be thousands of other people wearing the sweater you bought for you dear Aunt Louise.  However, a handmade item is unique, possibly never before seen, and a conversation piece.
  5. Moms supporting moms. You may have a personal endeavor on which you're working (a blog perhaps?).  You want people to support you.  All these creative artists and crafters want people supporting them too...and who better than people in their same sisterhood...moms!
  6. Personalization. Often times you can personalize your handmade item.  Either literally via embroidery, or figuratively via specifying colors or patterns.  You surely cannot do this at box stores at the mall.
  7. Customer Service. When you buy handmade....

Marketing Mix: P is for Price

Welcome to the next installment in my Marketing 101 Series - Marketing Mix: P is for Price.  For a review of the series thus far, refer to my earlier posts The 4 P's of Marketing and Marketing Mix: P is for Product.  This post will focus on the basics of setting a sell price.  One of the main elements of the item you're selling is your price.  If it's too high, you won't sell it.  If it's too low, you may be sending the wrong message.  Here are some items to consider when setting your price:
  1. Your competition.  How does your item compare to your closest competitors' items?  If it's a true apples-to-apples comparison, you must make sure you can price lower, otherwise customers will choose the competitor over you.  Is your product of a superior quality?  If so, you could possibly charge more.  Do you differentiate from your competition?  If so, state in your literature how / why your item is different from the standard item on the market. In the age of selling from Etsy and Facebook pages, it very possible a potential customer is unaware of certain competitors.  You should be sure to research a good handful (at least 10), put together a spreadsheet, and analyze where you fit.  There are so many small businesses out there, your sample size of competitors may not be the same ones to which a customer would turn, so make your research circle wide enough, and comprise it of just your closest competitors.
  2. Your costs. The biggest factor contributing to your sell price is your costs.  Your sell price must cover your costs, otherwise you're "in the red."  A company would go bankrupt if they operated like this.   You must also cover a reasonable profit.  After all, you are in business to make some money, right?  Start by making a list of your costs...and be aware that each cost must be broken into a unit cost.  Here are some examples if you are a jewelry designer: cost of beads per bracelet, cost of wire per bracelet (or whatever holds everything together!), your hourly wage (yes, you must pay yourself), your gas money to the supply store, etc.  If you offer free-shipping, be sure to factor this in as a cost.  You don't necessarily need fancy software.  Create a simple Excel spreadsheet showing how many of each unit goes into each bracelet, calculate the unit cost, then sum to determine the cost per bracelet.  If you set this as your price (which you really wouldn't do), it would be your break-even price...the price that allows you to recoup your cost on the bracelet.  Since you want to make money, decide on a realistic mark-up percentage or profit margin, and calculate it.  Hub Pages has a good article explaining the difference between mark-up and margin, and shows how to calculate them.
  3. Your customer. At this point in the game, you should have already defined your target market.  Who is your customer?  Where does s/he shop, what is her style, what is her demographic, what is her income, etc.  How much do you think she would be willing to pay for your item?  What value does it give her, and does that value add to your sell price?  Also factor in the current economy and how much disposable income your customer may have.
  4. Supply and demand. Economics 101 states that high demand and low supply = higher prices.  Low demand and high supply = lower prices.  If a customer can get your item anywhere.....

Guest Post: 3 Tiers of Support You Need for Success

By Joanna Lindenbaum, Founder of Soulful Coaching for Busy Women. Her complete bio proceeds the article.

As a busy woman, sometimes it’s hard to remember that every once in a while you need help! Rome wasn’t built in a day and you can’t take on the world by yourself – you need a team of supportive people to help you. Here are some basic steps to help you identify the different types of support you need in order to take on your soul-centered project!

Take a minute and write down your top three fears, doubts, and concerns. Some of your
fears could be abolished if you just had a little outside help, right? The trick lies in delegating
responsibility within your 3-tier support system. What’s a 3-tier support system? They are the
levels of support that you need to conquer your soul-centered project and really succeed.
A great leader knows that to accomplish your goals, you need others to help you. By asking for
help, you don’t just achieve your goals, you achieve them more quickly and easily and you avoid
exhaustion and being overwhelmed. Sounds pretty simple, right? It is. There are three different
types of support that you need: support on tasks, creative support, and emotional support.

Tier 1: Basic Task Support
The first tier includes those people you can delegate tedious, everyday tasks to. In a sense, it may
seem like need a personal assistant but these tasks are the one that annoy you, distract you,
or take up too much of your time like cleaning your home, scheduling your clients, doing your
accounting…etc. You get the idea. You don’t need a ton of people in this tier, but take a moment and make a list of your daily tasks. Think of the tasks you don’t want to do or don’t have time for and pair them up with people who could potentially fill those roles. Fulfilling this tier is as simple as making a phone call.

Tier 2: Intellectual/Creative Support
In the second tier, you need people to brainstorm.....

7 Steps to Helping a Lost Child

As mothers, we all know how easy it is for a young child to get lost.  In the blink of an eye, the child can "disappear," and if you've ever lost sight of your little one for even a second, you know how this makes your heart pound and adrenaline rush.  This morning while shopping at a very large, local mall, I saw a little boy standing all alone crying.  Some people walked by him not paying attention, possibly assuming he was simply upset for not getting his way, but my mommy radar kicked in immediately.  I knew he was lost. This is what I did to help, that could have possibly prevented an abduction:
  1. Ask the child if he is lost. When I did this, the boy started running towards the stairs.  I followed him nonetheless (I'm not that scary...his mom probably told him not to talk to strangers...which is obviously a good thing!).  I stopped several stairs away from him and asked again if he was lost and said I could help him find Mommy.
  2. Get down to the child's level. He let me approach him, at which point I knelt down.  I took his hand and said "Are you looking for your mommy?  I can help you find her."
  3. State your name. I told him "My name is Tracy, what is your name?"  Ask the child for his mommy's name...if he's old and verbal enough, he will tell you, but don't expect it (this boy did not tell me).
  4. Introduce some common ground. I said "I have a little boy your age, he is 5.  How old are you?"  He clearly was beginning to trust me and said he is 4.
  5. Take a visual inspection to look for Mommy. It was early so the mall was not very crowded.  I didn't see any women frantically looking for a child.
  6. Go to Guest Services. The Guest Services desk was very close, so I held the boy's hand and walked him there.  I said "These people work here, they will help us find your Mommy."
  7. Stay with the child until Mommy is found.  Unless this is completely impossible, it's best to stay with the child...

3 Simple Tips to Enhance Your Blog

My site is approaching its 4 month birthday...oh how time flies!  I am a self-proclaimed techno novice.  Prior to 4 months ago, I rarely read a blog, yet alone created and managed one.  In the spirit of continuous improvement, I regularly research simple ways to enhance my site, ways that a beginner can do easily without being too fearful her blog will disappear into cyberspace...never to be seen again.  Here are a few great tips that make simple, yet substantial improvements:
  1. Open links in a new window. This is imperative.  You work so hard to get someone to your site.  Like me, you probably have a number of ways (i.e. links) for them to exit your site as well.  The last thing you want is for the person to exit, and not be able to return.  Some are regular readers, but much of your audience may be people who can't easily recall your site name; therefore, may not be able to find it again once they leave your site.  This is why coding your site for links to open in a new window is imperative.  Your site remains open so they can come back for more!  There is a simple code to make this happen.  Here it is:                                target="_blank">    You go to the html portion of your blog post.  After the link address, you enter the code target="_blank">.  I found this tip on this site HTML Goodies.  Here is an example of how it will look in the html section of your blog post:                                               <a href="http://www.htmlgoodies.com/"target="_blank">HTML Goodies.</  See where I added the new code?  It's best to copy your entire html from your blog post prior to adding this, just in case you do it wrong.  I personally add this after each link on my site.  There may be a more efficient way to add this to your entire site, but a) I'm not interested in doing this right now and b) I haven't learned that yet! ;).
  2. Add grouped social media buttons. When I started my site I had a separate widget for each social media button: Facebook, Twitter, Email sign-up, RSS sign-up, etc.  It was a big goal of mine to compactly add these in a simple box like I have now.  I found this site Single Dad Laughing - Extras which provids free code for precisely what I wanted.  You can choose the size, the exact make-up, and the overall look (rounded, squares, circles).  It was very easy to add this widget to my site.  You then need to follow Dan's instructions on how to get the buttons to work.  This simply involves revising the html code for each button to match your url.  Follow his directions, it was pretty easy.  Note: I added the code tip from #1 above here so when you click to Dan's site, it opens in a new window!
  3. Add a signature to blog posts.  I discovered the site My Live Signature. I used their signature creation wizard to create the simple signature you see at the end of this post.  After I completed their simple steps (which allowed me to choose the slant, size, and font of my signature), I grabbed the html code, went to the html code section of my blog posts, and pasted it at the end.  Simple Simon.  I manually add this to all my posts now.  Yes, there is a way to have this done automatically, but remember, I'm a techno novice and I'm doing everything myself, so at the present time I look for easy ways to enhance my site, without the fear that I will mess up major code and ruin everything!
If you are a novice like me, try these tips, you'll be glad you did.  If you are a seasoned blogger or even an expert, you probably aren't reading this, but that's okay, I still love you!  If you have any tips to share, I would love to read them below.

5 Steps to Organizing Your Kids' Clothes

Wordle: GETORGANIZEDThe crisp smell of fall in the air made me realize the Season of Organization has arrived.  If you visit often, you know I'm an organized person.  I like order, cleanliness, and simplicity.  However, some projects seem to sit on the to-do list until the time feels right.  Well, the time is finally here for me to organize my kids' closets and drawers...afterall, who wants to do this in the summer when it's gorgeous outside?  This is how I plan to tackle this project:
  1. Get a big box (or 2). I save large boxes in which we received shipped items.  One can always find a use for a big cardboard box, so save it away (collapse if you must to save space), and bring it out for a project like this.
  2. Start with the dresser. Work your way down, or up.  I take one item out of the drawer at a time.  After a quick analysis, and sometimes nostalgic feelings of the kids when they were younger, I put the item in 1 of 4 piles: "give away," "donate" (or "garage sale"), "save" for sentimental reasons, or "still fits." I only give away clothes I think the person will really want...it's a lot kinder that way than just giving a friend a big box potentially filled with the wrong sizes or stained clothes. Yuck.  I only save a few sentimental items...perhaps a shirt that was worn for a special occasion.
  3. Start filling box(es). Once the 1st drawer is empty....

How to Organize Kids' School Papers

My son just started Kindergarten, and I'm already overwhelmed with the amount of paperwork involved!  There is the homework pile, the completed homework pile, the parents' paperwork pile, the volunteer pile, the fundraiser pile, the activity pile, etc. There are due dates for daily homework, weekly homework, projects, volunteer sign-up, library book return, classroom book return, and parent/school meetings. Then, we can't forget soccer and gymnastics forms, picture days, and fundraisers. I'm exhausted just reading all this! So, although I typically offer tips and tricks, and although I'm generally a very organized person (a place for everything and everything in its place type of person) I'm also not above soliciting opinions. So, for all you seasoned parents of school-age kids, how do you keep kids' paperwork and schedules organized? Comment below and help save my sanity.

35 Lessons From My 35 Years

Well, my 35th birthday has arrived.  September 9.  I love my birthday, and since this is somewhat of a milestone, I've created a list of 35 lessons I've learned in my 35 years.  Here goes:

  1. Always continue learning.
  2. Be nice to others, you don't know their struggles.
  3. Don't try to define yourself by your possessions.
  4. Accept constructive criticism.
  5. Say you're sorry and admit your mistakes.
  6. Never go to bed angry with your spouse.
  7. Don't take anything for granted.
  8. Work at being healthy, it doesn't just show up on your doorstep.
  9. People who judge others do so out of their own insecurities.
  10. Some people are simply not nice, forget them and move on.
  11. The car one drives is not necessarily a symbol of his success.
  12. If you suspect a health issue, see a doctor before it's too late.
  13. Say "I love you" more often, you never know when it will be the last time.
  14. Some people in the world are more successful, richer, more intelligent, thinner, more attractive than you. An equal amount of people in the world are less successful, poorer, less intelligent, heavier, less attractive than you. Be happy with yourself.
  15. Be proud of your accomplishments.
  16. Don't be too proud you dismiss others' ideas or comments.
  17. Choose your words carefully.
  18. Think before you react...especially using the written word.
  19. Try new things.
  20. Don't be afraid of failure, for it is just a mere stepping stone on the path of self-discovery.
  21. Save for retirement & your kids' college....

Play Dates: 5 Things to Discuss Before Heading Out

The following is a guest post by Camille James, founder of Great Parent Connection.  Her site offers parenting advice and support...I encourage you to check it out.  Her bio can be found on our Guest Writers page.

If you have a young child, at some point s/he will come to you and ask to have a play date with another child from school or from the neighborhood.  Agreeing to let your child have a play date is something that you need to think carefully about before making your decision. Take into consideration that if you say yes to your child, s/he may want to do this more often than your schedule may allow. Some parents really do like play dates because it offers their child an opportunity to develop healthy social skills, and give them a chance to meet new friends.  So, before you head out, here are 5 things to discuss with your child:
  1. Time Limit. This one may sound very simple, but I guarantee you that if you do not make this the first thing you tell your child before leaving, you be talking to him / her for 10 minutes without any results. First, you need to let your child know the time limit. For example, if you are willing to spend 2 hours out with your child on their play date, please let your child know this before you leave the home. Also, explain the consequences to your child if s/he refuses to leave at the end of the 2 hour time limit.
  2. Playing Nicely. Next, you need to talk to your child about the importance of playing nicely with their play date. Part of growing up and having friendships has a lot to do with the way you treat others and the way others treat you. That being said, you need to let you child know what behaviors are unacceptable. This will help your child to understand what not to accept or tolerate from another child while on their play date.
  3. Strangers. Here’s one that many parents forget to mention. If your child’s play date is at a park or some public place where there are lots of people, you need to talk to your child about strangers. This conversation should happen before you leave the house to ensure that your child has a clear understanding of your expectations when it comes to strangers. Although you may be with your child at on their play date, you may not be able to see everything.
  4. Eating. Kids love to eat out! So, do not miss your opportunity to discuss with your child whether or not you plan to buy food while on their play date. There’s nothing worse than a child asking for soda and candy during their play date when you do not allow him or her to consume such sweets. A better solution to this problem may be to schedule their play dates around snack time or lunch time - that way you can choose a healthy meal for your child without all the fuss.
  5. Have fun. Finally, remind your child to have fun. Let him or her know that you love them and that you want them to enjoy this time with their friends. Use this time to reinforce your expectations of them in terms of behavior. Also, let your child know that if for any reason he or she wishes to end the play date, to let you know right away. Take into consideration that some kids do get overwhelmed if there’s too much stimulation or activities taking place all at once on a play date.
Now, kiss your child and head out the door to their play date!

Motivational Quotes

The following are some motivational quotes I came across by Jim Rohn,  who was an American entrepreneur, personal development expert, and motivational speaker. I am a sap for motivational and inspirational quotes, so I will periodically be posting the best ones I can find...and many are by Jim Rohn.  I think it's valuable to read quotes like these and try to apply them to our own lives.

Skills: Don't wish it were easier; wish you were better. Don't wish for less problems; wish for more skills. Don't wish for less challenges; wish for more wisdom.

Growth: Don't join an easy crowd. You won't grow. Go where the expectations and the demands to perform and achieve are high.

Change: We generally change ourselves for one of two reasons: inspiration or desperation.

Activity: The few who do are the envy of the many who watch.

Success: Success is what you attract by the person you become.

Association: You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

Think about these and how they apply to you, your dreams, and your goals.  They may change your perspective a bit, motivate you further, and help push away the naysayers.

Happy Labor Day weekend!
