- Milk Carton Boats: This will only work if you use cardboard milk cartons; however, even if you have to buy a carton and quickly use the milk the expense will be well worth it. Cartons are often covered by a protective film, so an acrylic paint will be best for the job of covering up the milk brand. A selection of paints are available at many craft stores, so your children can paint their cartons and add any detail to the “ship,” such as a name or other details. Pierce a hole in the side of the carton and place a straw or a pipe cleaner into it. If you get the hole just right, you will be able to place it perfectly, although if you made it too big you can simply tape it to hold it still. Make a sail out of paper or card and allow your child to color it in however he wishes. Stick it to the mast and your ship is complete! It should, repeat should, float in the bath – try it!
- Musical Instruments: You could make many musical instruments with recyclables or other things left lying around the house. The best ideas are often the most simple, and that is a principle we stuck to here. Get any old food cans together and ensure both ends are open. Before giving to your children, wrap paper around any sharp edges so there will be no nasty cuts received. Your children will need some additional paper, coloring pencils / pens / paints, elastic bands, and dried beans or lentils. The most basic idea will see your child make a colorful shaker toy by placing beans in the tin and sealing up both ends with paper and elastic bands. If you are able to get involved, then perhaps use some old plastic or another material stretched over one end and make yourself a small, homemade bongo drum instead.
